Elliott Bay Book Company officially has arrived at its new home on 10th ave between Pine and Pike.  I went down to help set up tables for the Block Party yesterday.

Being a book worm, I’ve been eager to explore the new store.  It had that new bookstore smell, which smells like fresh cut wood.  Beautiful, bright and welcoming.  I look forward to walking to readings after leaving Whimsy at night!

The Capitol Hill Chamber, Jill from Hunter’s Capitol, Gary Manuel Aveda School and all the sponsors did a great job throwing the party.  Welcome Elliott Bay Books!

We love Jody, the owner of Tiempo.  She always has a smile on her face.  And sometimes she dresses up like a clock and runs amok in the 14th and E.Pine intersection.

Jody is the knowledgeable owner of Tiempo, a whimsical, beautiful timepiece shop just down the street from Whimsy Home Decor.   Seattle Metropolitan magazine just wrote a wonderful piece about Jody and Tiempo.   The next time you’re here visiting Whimsy be sure to stop by and say “Hi” to Jody!

The second Thursday of the October is almost upon us.  Blitz Capitol Hill Art Walk is this Thursday October 8 from 5pm -8pm.  Whimsy will be showing the work of Justin Hillgrove.  His series of paintings is aptly named Imps and Monsters – perfect for the Art Walk before Halloween. We will be showing his full size original paintings and also smaller prints.

Me?

Me?

10% of all art sales will be donated to Art with Heart.  Justin chose this charity as one that is personally important to him.  So if you see a piece that you must have, you’ll also be helping a great cause.

Stop by for wine and art this Thursday the 8th!   You’re sure to fall in love with Justin’s Imps and Monsters. See you there.

Jules Anslow's Art at Whimsy

Jules Anslow at Whimsy

Can you believe it’s the second Thursday of September already?  And that can only mean one thing: Capitol Hill Arts Walk! From 5pm to 8pm tonight (September 10) you can see over 40 art exhibits in local stores and restaurants in Capitol Hill.

Whimsy Home Decor is pleased to host Jules Anslow.  Jules began her artistic journey by creating jewelry and pottery. These day she works primarily in acrylic paint on wood.  “From multi-level cutout paintings to three-dimensional murals, Jules  uses every opportunity to combine 2D and 3D for a larger-than-life effect.”

You may have seen her work in Pike Place Market’s 2007 Pigs on Parade – she created two of the pigs.

Toaster

As always, 10% of the art sales tonight at Whimsy will go to the artists charity of choice.  Jules has chosen Pigs Peace Sanctuary to donate to.  They give care and safe haven to pigs who have been mistreated, neglected or hurt.

Anyone in the Capitol Hill area looking for something fun to do tonight?  Attend Blitz!, the reconfigured Capitol Hill Arts Walk. Over 40 businesses are participating tonight by displaying art, promoting music, and hosting artists of all mediums. Check out a map of the festivities online at Blitz or come to Whimsy to pick one up in person.

We at Whimsy are hosting artist Jeanette Jones, whose fresh and colorful canvases have already begun attracting interest after a few days in our window! Jeanette will be here in person to talk about her art and meet some of Whimsy’s wonderful customers. If you do decide to purchase a piece, 10% of your money will be donated to YouthCare, a Seattle charity that provides shelter and assistance to homeless youths. The party starts at 5 pm on the dot. We hope to see you here!

Today we read on the Capitol Hill Seattle blog about the imminent opening of Porchlight Coffee at 14th and Pine. We at Whimsy are immensely excited about this not only because we love coffee (this is Seattle, after all), but also because Porchlight will be our newest neighbor! Their address is 1515 14th street, while Whimsy is located at 1535.

In fact while Whimsy was walking to the bus stop yesterday evening, we meandered right under the ladder featured in the picture to the upper left. According to the gentlemen in charge of operations, Porchlight Coffee will have a grand fête later this month. Expect Whimsy to be in attendance, gift basket in hand.

We honestly cannot wait to enjoy a coffee and pastry with our new neighbors at Porchlight Coffee – the first of many, we are sure. Welcome to the neighborhood!

We at Whimsy are very proud to be located in Capitol Hill, the second most densely populated area in Seattle and home to many of the city’s independent, locally owned retail shops – ourselves included.

A bit of history about the Hill:  Before becoming known as Capitol Hill, the area was known as Broadway Hill – aren’t you glad they changed it in 1901? It was developed primarily in the early part of the 20th century, when many of the large houses that dominate the residential part of the neighborhood were constructed. The historic Volunteer Park located in Capitol Hill was established in 1903 by famous landscape architects, the Olmsted Brothers.

In 2009 Capitol Hill is renowned for having an open-minded, active community, as well as for being dotted with unique places where residents can gather to drink locally brewed coffee, eat fabulous food, attend art shows, rock out at one of many music venues, see hard to find foreign films, or simply walk around and take in the leafy sights. Culturally speaking, Capitol Hill is the place to be in Seattle.

But that’s not all this vibrant and – yes – hip neighborhood has to offer. Many events also take place in Capitol Hill, including, but not limited to, the monthly Art Walk, the Capitol Hill Block Party (which we here at Whimsy are looking immensely forward to), and tons of free seminars, performances, and meetings that are always on our calendar. With the construction of a new underground Sound Transit station, expect the Capitol Hill area to continue to grow and change with the influx of new people.
